Clarion programs - Making App Data UAC (Vista) safe and XP compatible

This information applies to four UAC aware Windows operating systems: Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 (Windows Server 7).

Here are some basic instructional examples you can use for reference and adapt to your needs.

The combined Text/CHM versions will contain updated and expanded tutorial information, including multi user account tutorial. Compare the revision date in your copy of the text and/or CHM with the blog date for latest.

Overview

Start of Clarion ProPath reference -

If you want to create a Clarion program that will work with UAC (Vista) approved methods (and be XP compatible including non-admin user accounts), this introductory tutorial will provide basic instructional examples you can use for reference and adapt to your needs.

Almost immediately after I had edited the original * Clarion programs - Making App Data UAC (Vista) safe and XP compatible * blog, and started to make a CHM version, Charles Edmonds and I had discussions about a new product his company (LANSRAD) might consider offering to the Clarion community.

Of course, the original example was a starting point (and practical example) to determine where (and how) you need to store your app data files, install techniques, etc - It was a single user approach, and some of the methods could be adapted for Multi-user use.

This updated example (included in downloadable Text/CHM version) includes a multi user account approach, and of course, is just one of many configurations - Clarion ProPath enables Clarion Developers to quickly implement, and very creatively edit for a wide variety of purposes!

Included are some basic instructional examples you can use for reference and adapt to your needs.

Note: These methods were tested and successfully accomplished specifically using Clarion 6.3.9055 (EZChangeLog Reporter).

Product Scope 7.8 - is a commercially released product using Clarion ProPath .

Minimally, you WILL need LANSRAD Clarion ProPath to accomplish the multi user account approach presented in the CHM tutorial.

CapeSoft’s WinEvent is illustrated in the another help topic in the combined Text/CHM version. Icetips Utilities also offers some alternative methods to accomplish similar path setting functions. Both products are well featured, and can be used for path setting functions, PLUS MANY other tasks as well.

However, keep in mind, Clarion ProPath is a dedicated tool to set paths, offering a variety of methods and configuration tools to quickly setup projects.

Clarion 6 UAC Installation Fix 1.30

Version 1.30 of the Clarion 6 UAC Installation Fix application is available for download. It supports both 32- and 64-bit Windows. For compatibility reasons, it’s still called “Vista fix”.

The Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7 operating systems provide a new security feature named User Account Control (UAC). An “UAC-aware” installer is required in order to correctly install your applications.

Even if your Clarion 3rd party vendor provides a UAC-aware installer, it’s not possible to correctly auto-detect the installed Clarion version. The original Clarion 6 installer is unable to write to the WIN.INI file and to update the system path environment variable on Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7.

These actions require a UAC-aware installer with administrator execution level privileges. The Clarion 6 Vista Installation Fix freeware application makes the appropriate WIN.INI modifications so 3rd party installations can detect Clarion 6 on Vista, Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7 machines.

It also adds the Clarion \Bin path to the system path environment variable. You can redistribute this application to your customers. You don’t need this fix for Clarion 7.

Vista, Windows 7 and Clarion 6

Windows 7 Updated!

If you are using Clarion 6 with Vista or Windows 7, or plan to, there are only two issues that will annoy you, and both are easily resolved.

The issues are:

1. Text or Buttons on some IDE windows are clipped if you are using the Vista Aero style.

2. The Windows Help (WinHlp32.exe) program is no longer included with Windows operating systems starting with Windows Vista

The first issue is very easy to handle. The issue of clipped text is a direct effect of the default border padding used with the Aero style.

Here is what you need to do:

1. Open the Control Panel
2. Open the Appearance and Personalization section.

3. Click on the Personalization section.
4. In Personalization, select Window Color and Appearance

5. Towards the bottom of the screen text, click on the Open classic appearance properties for more color options option.
6. With Windows Aero scheme selected, click Advanced

7. In the Item dropdown list , select Border Padding. This will be set to 4 by default. Set it to either 0 or 1, and save your changes.

When you next start Clarion, things should look a lot better.
